Yahoo Group update

March 28th, 2007 · 3 Comments

7:30PM PDT: Yahoo says the problem is fixed, but duplicate messages are still going out on many groups, including ours, even though I have disabled posting.

7:47PM PDT: Yahoo now admits that their fix didn’t work, and is trying again.

8:17PM PDT: This from Yahoo:
Duplicate Messages and Email Delivery

We’re aware of the duplicate message bug that has been affecting groups today and are working to resolve the issue (a side effect of this bug is that some messages are also being delayed). We have actually pushed two fixes already, but we are aware that some groups are still experiencing the problem and that more needs to be done to fully resolve the issue.

There is, however, one silver lining to this bug. It was the result of our latest system updates intended to improve email delivery speeds. So once the bugs are resolved, we should see a significant reduction in the time it takes to deliver messages to Yahoo! Groups members.

We will update this blog entry as soon as we have more definitive information on the status of this issue.

Thank you and our apologies for any inconvenience caused by the duplicate messages.

The Yahoo! Groups Team

8:30PM PDT: We’re definitely the only people that are still having troubles. See here.

9:40PM PDT: Yahoo again says the problem is fixed. Many people still reporting problems, and I still am taking duplicate email messages out of the group’s archive.

11:00PM PDT: 556 complaints to Yahoo in one thread alone. I am still deleting duplicates.

12:23AM PDT: Still no sign of a fix. I’m going to have to go to bed soon and try in a few hours to see if they have come up with a fix.

6:27AM PDT: The problem is still not fixed. Still no word from Yahoo. Complaints in one thread over 1,300. Sone groups reporting over 200 duplicates.

7:14AM PDT: Some moderators and group owners are reporting getting forcibly unsubbed from their own groups due to “spamming.” I don’t think that we’re having that problem because I turned off posting as soon as I realized what was happening. I’ve cleaned up most of the duplicate posts in our archive, but I think that there’s still a few and more occasionally appear. We’ll have to do some tidying up when this is all over.

7:30AM PDT: Even though I have posting turned off, some new messages that were in the queue hours ago have finally come through.

8:15AM PDT: Yahoo says that they have posted yet another fix:

Update (8:00 am PST, 3/29): A fix was pushed at midnight (Pacific Time) that we believe has resolved the problem for messages submitted after that time. However, it is possible that some users of some groups may have continued to receive duplicates of messages that were posted before midnight.

I’m going to leave things as they are for a little while to make sure the fix actually works.

8:40AM PDT: I am sending out a test message to the group to see if it goes through without problems. I have the list set so only moderators can post until I know that people will not receive 100 copies of every post. Hopefully things will be back to normal soon.

9:21AM PDT: The test message I sent posted, just once :-) so far. Some groups are still complaing about duplicate posts, though. Still hoping for the best.

10:21AM PDT: I’ve tentatively restored posting to all members, but have turned moderation on for everybody. Let’s see if this works. If so, I will restore normal unmoderated posting to all members. Thanks for your patience during all this.

12:47PM PST: Some users are reporting not gettng any mail from the group.

3:49PM PST: The duplicate posts seem to be gone, and mail seems to be being delivered again. I’ve reset the settings to what they were before this snafu happened, and hopefully all will be well. We are back to our normal unmoderated free-for-all.

For those of you who are still not getting mail, Yahoo says that their servers are catching up, and I’ll keep an eye on it.

Thanks for the work. I’ve been hesitant to do much moderating on this issue as you jumped on it and I didn’t want to work at cross-purposes. If you want to delegate out some of the work, I’ll follow your lead.

Qusaibill, if you could help me clean up the duplicate posts, I’d appreciate it.

Now posts are showing up in the archive, but I haven’t gotten any in my e-mail. This seems to be the new common problem for yahoo groups.

And one of Roderick’s messages from this morning duplicated as well, although I deleted it from the archives, along with a lot of other duplicated posts.
